KINDLE EDITION - I purchased this book right before I left for San Francisco, so in rush I got the Kindle Edition to start reading right away. I found the information made my trip even more enjoyable in understanding some of the back story of places and events. HOWEVER, the KINDLE version does not allow you to navigate the book by the table of contents. You have to turn pages hoping you find what you are looking for......a real let-down when trying to quickly access a historic site. The information gets 5-stars. Historic San Francisco A Concise History and Guide eBook Rand Richards Reviews
Good Read -
My family arrived in SF. in 1849. I learned new info from this book.
a good broad account of the history of San Francisco. Not particularly details around more current events. Everything after the 1906 earthquake is fairly brief, but it does a great job of talking through early settlers, spanish influence, gold rush and everything up to and during the earhquake
Gives a good overview of the development of San Francisco. In addition provides lots of unusual details many of which I had never read anywhere else.
Even as a lifelong San Francisco resident, I was blown away by how much I learned from this book. Amount of detail was perfect and interesting facts are present throughout the book. Easy to read and entertaining. I highly recommend this as a starting point to anyone interested in San Francisco history. Would pair well with Season of the Witch, as that does a deeper dive into the period from 1967 to 1982 in San Francisco
As a San Franciscan, a great tip for anyone reading this book is to have Google street view open on a computer or device as the author notes many points of interest by address and/or street intersections. To someone living in the city, these places are either well known or roughly known, but San Francisco as a city doesn't provide great signage to them. Otherwise, as a combo guidebook / historical overview of Fog City, this is worth the price.
I read this book before my recent trip to SF and found it to be invaluable.
I am busy enough and travel often enough that I don't have time to conduct exhaustive research about every destination. Mr. Richards came to my rescue with this well-written and engaging e-book.
The book is designed to be read through once and then consulted as necessary while you are touring SF. Each section gives an overview about a significant stage in the City's discovery/development with informative and entertaining stories. Then, the end of the book summarizes the most significant attractions. Having read through it just before arriving in SF, I had a sense of (1) what to look for, (2) the history behind what I was looking at and (3) what the City would have looked like in the past.
This book may not be as helpful to you if you are already familiar with the City's history. For what it's worth, I paid attention in school but nonetheless found the time and money spent on this e-book to be a worthwhile investment before visiting SF.
